Heritage & Reinvention
Today, with the launch of our new look, we pay tribute to our history and heritage. We also recognize that while we are one of the most deeply-established venture capital firms in Europe, our success over the last 50 years has been built on reinvention.
Innovation is in our name
Our roots are intertwined in our name, and our future springs from it. Sofinnova comes from “Société de financement pour l’innovation,” roughly translated as “Society for the financing of innovation.” We are the first venture capital firm to have been established in Paris, and for 50 years we have been supporting innovation. For the next 50 years, we will continue to foster breakthrough discoveries in life sciences.
Our name has another meaning. Sofi, from the ancient Greek sophíā, which means high knowledge, learning, and wisdom. Nova, from the Latin novus, meaning new. In astronomy, nova is also a sudden brightening of a previously inconspicuous star. Why does this matter?
Complexity and wisdom
Because in venture capital, it would be unwise to be just wise. Our increasingly complex world calls for a new type of wisdom. We can no longer apply the solutions and rationale that may have worked in the past. We need to renew our perspectives and thinking, continuously.
We are a team of scientists, doctors, entrepreneurs, and experts in highly specialized subjects. Our job is to cut through the inherent complexity of highly sophisticated, niche domains to make intelligent investment decisions.
Audacity and conviction
We also believe that it takes a bit of audacity to lead investments with conviction, to believe in science, humanity, and the prospect of a better future.
Science and people
If our 50 years of experience has taught us anything, it’s that what matters most is hope, humility, and humanity. So even as we embark on this transformation, there are things that will not change — our values, our purpose, and our commitment to science and people. We remain true to our roots.
