The vision for the Industrial Biotech strategy emerged almost two decades ago with the conviction that there was a huge, untapped opportunity to apply our life sciences investment knowledge to assist sustainability-focused entrepreneurs turning science into innovation. Many of the tools, platforms, and manufacturing methods initially developed within the tightly regulated healthcare sector have matured and became less expensive. The past decade saw synthetic biology take many of these foundational models, along with entirely new concepts, to decarbonize processes and products.
We focus on the agriculture, food, chemicals, and materials verticals, as they are secular markets in which biotech can achieve significant impact. This practice has shown that targeting environmental impact not only benefits the environment, but also yields strong financial returns. For two decades, Sofinnova Industrial Biotech has stood at the forefront of a young industry—partaking in its progress, pioneering its breakthroughs, and witnessing its cycles of triumph and setback. We’ve celebrated the companies that scaled and learned from those that didn’t. Now, with the full weight of that experience, we look ahead.
Sofinnova Industrial Biotech Impact Report 2025 The next chapter will write the blueprint for the future. And it must succeed. The world’s need for environmental action is even greater now than when we started, except we can no longer rely on government mandates or consumer demand. We have long come to believe that we must back only the best solutions, with superior performance and pricing to become competitive. Our team is convinced that the most successful companies of the next decades will be those using innovative technologies to tackle climate change because sustainability consistently delivers multiple co-benefits: improved health outcomes, reduced cost volatility, and greater supply security through localized production.
